Nnamdi Asomugha joining San Francisco 49ers
Nnamdi Asomugha is headed back to the Bay Area. After starring in college at the University of California and earning two All-Pro nods with the Oakland Raiders, Asomugha is taking his talents to the other side of the bay.
The cornerback has agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers, sources told NFL.com's Ian Rapoport on Tuesday. Per Rapoport, Asomugha will earn $1.35 million in base salary with a chance to earn an additional $1.65 million in incentives. Asomugha already pocketed $4 million from the Philadelphia Eagles.
Asomugha chose the stacked 49ers over a reunion with former Raiders defensive coordinator Rob Ryan on the New Orleans Saints after being courted by both teams.
Asomugha was an unqualified bust with the Eagles after signing as the top free agent on the market in 2011. His press-man coverage skill set was never ideally suited to the "Wide Nine" scheme prevalent in Philadelphia over the past two seasons. The 31-year-old bottomed out by allowing an eye-popping 120.6 passer rating on throws in his territory last season, according to Pro Football Focus.
The 49ers were in the market for a cornerback with size after quarterbacks Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco carved up their secondary in the NFC Championship Game and Super Bowl XLVII, respectively. The hope is that Asomugha will bounce back from being one of the NFL's most easily burned cornerbacks in 2012 now that he's joining a defense more suited to his strengths.
There's little question that Asomugha gradually lost his confidence and make-up speed in Philadelphia. While he might regain the former on the title-contending 49ers, the latter might have evaporated for good.
