Raul Ibanez stars for Seattle Mariners against New York Yankees
Raul Ibanez made a triumphant return to Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night, hitting a grand slam and a two-run homer as the Seattle Mariners trounced New York 12-2.
The 40-year-old drove in four runs against Phil Hughes in a seven-run first inning. He followed that up with a two-run shot off Brett Marshall in the fifth, and the American League East-leading Yankees had no answer.
Stephen Drew's second career grand slam capped off an eight-run third inning for Boston as the Red Sox toppled Tampa Bay 9-2, ending the Rays' six-game winning streak. Jon Lester allowed just two runs in seven innings.
Also in the American League, the Texas Rangers overcame the Oakland Athletics 6-2, the Houston Astros edged the Detroit Tigers 7-5, the Chicago White Sox were 9-4 winners against the Minnesota Twins and seven runs in the third inning helped the Kansas City Royals to a 9-5 win over the Los Angeles Angels.
Shin-Soo Choo went 4-for-5, with home runs in the fourth and sixth inning, as the Cincinnati Reds stretched their winning streak to a season-best five games with a 4-0 victory over the Miami Marlins in the National League.
Cubs topple Rockies
Jeff Samardzija restricted Colorado to two runs over eight innings and smashed a two-run homer to help the Chicago Cubs sink the Rockies 6-3.
Wandy Rodriguez threw down seven strong innings in the Pittsburgh Pirates' 3-1 success against the Milwaukee Brewers, while Eric Chavez drove in three runs to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 5-3 triumph over the Atlanta Braves.
In other National League action, the St Louis Cardinals saw off the New York Mets 4-2 and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Washington Nationals 3-1.
Jason Kipnis, Mike Aviles and Nick Swisher had home runs and Corey Kluber pitched six strong innings as the Cleveland Indians prevailed 10-4 in their Interleague clash with the Philadelphia Phillies.
Finally, Alexi Amarista hit a two-run homer and two doubles for San Diego in the Padres' 8-4 win over the Baltimore Orioles and a five-run opening inning spurred the Toronto Blue Jays to an 11-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants.
