Aaron Rodgers, Packers closer to contract extension? Empty Aaron Rodgers, Packers closer to contract extension?

A contract extension for Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers seems like a matter of when, not if. The Packers said publicly last week that they have made it a priority to get Rodgers a new contract before the start of the 2013 season. Progress is being made.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Thursday that Rodgers and the Packers are getting closer on a contract extension that would make Rodgers the highest-paid player in NFL history (until he's replaced by the next quarterback to become the highest-paid player in NFL history).

Rodgers has two years left on his contract, but the team clearly is prioritizing getting his new contract done before moving on to contracts for linebacker Clay Matthews and possibly nose tackle B.J. Raji. Packers fans who complain about general manager Ted Thompson not spending money in free agency should keep these deals in mind.

The Packers will spend plenty of money on their homegrown superstars, the guys that Thompson drafted.
