NFL Draft: No 1 overall pick Eric Fisher of the Kansas City Chiefs Empty NFL Draft: No 1 overall pick Eric Fisher of the Kansas City Chiefs

Eric Fisher received the honour of being the No 1 overall pick of the 2013 NFL Draft when he was chosen by the Kansas City Chiefs at the start of a defensive-looking first round of the draft in New York.

The Central Michigan man was the first name read out by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell at Radio City Music Hall - the first time a player from that small school has led the Draft selections.

In a draft dominated by linemen and defensive players, just the one quarterback was taken and no running back was selected for the first time since 1963.

There was also disappointment for Manchester's Menelik Watson who did not get off the board in the first round, but he was not alone as the much-hyped Manti Te'o also went undrafted, although both should be chosen eventually.

The Jacksonville Jaguars also selected an offensive tackle with the second overall pick as they selected Jake Loeckel to mark the first time two players from that position occupied the first two Draft positions.

The first big move of the night came early on as the Oakland Raiders traded away the third pick to the Miami Dolphins, who have splashed the cash this off-season and were keen to get hold of Oregon's defensive end Dion Jordan.
Collision

Oakland got a second rounder off Miami and moved down to 12th where they selected cornerback DJ Hayden as he completed his remarkable story by grabbing a place in the NFL after nearly dying from a heart problem caused by a heavy collision in training.

Making an even bigger statement than the Dolphins at the Draft, though, was the Minnesota Vikings, who already had two first-round picks but traded back into the latter stages to make it the first three-pick first round since the 2001 Rams.

The Vikings bulked up on defence with tackle Sherrif Floyd and cornerback Xavier Rhodes before handing four later round picks to the Patriots for their 29th overall to get Tennessee's exciting receiver Cordarrelle Patterson as they send out a message they are looking for a big run after making the play-offs last year.

St Louis Rams traded with the Buffalo Bills to get their eighth pick to select the top receiver on the boards in Tavon Austin to thwart the New York Jets who had been thought to have been looking to bring in the West Virginia playmaker.

As opposed to last year, only one quarterback was taken and that was not until halfway through the Draft when the Bills surprisingly picked EJ Manuel, with the highly-touted Geno Smith going undrafted and having to wait until Saturday for his name to be called.

There was an international flavour to the Draft as Ghana-born Ziggy Ansah was picked in fifth by the Detroit Lions, while Germany's Bjoern Werner came out at 24th to the Indianapolis Colts.

The Draft continues on Friday with the second of what will be seven rounds of picks by the 32 NFL teams.
