Asian Tour: Bernd Wiesberger edges out Ernie Els to win Indonesian Masters
Bernd Wiesberger held his nerve to upstage Ernie Els and claim a one-shot victory at the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters.
The Austrian closed with a composed five under 67 at the Royale Jakarta Golf Club to deny the Open champion his first win since lifting the Claret Jug at Royal Lytham last year.
Wiesberger raced out of the blocks with a birdie at the first, but he gave the shot back at the fourth before claiming the outright lead with birdies at the eighth and ninth.
Els cut the deficit to one when he matched Wiesberger's birdie at nine, only for both players to be overtaken by overnight leader Daisuke Kataoka when he got to 13 under with birdies at 10 and 11.
But Wiesberger responded with a superb eagle at the par-five 12th, and Els then nailed a 30-foot putt for a three while Kataoka slipped back to third when he could not better par.
The Japanese player then dropped a shot at 14, and Wiesberger doubled his advantage with a birdie at the 16th while Els spurned a series of makeable birdie putts in a run of five straight pars.
Wiesberger had to settle for a par-five at the final hole, but he was soon celebrating his second Asian Tour title after Els failed to make the eagle his needed to force a play-off.
Wiesberger's 67 was the low round of the day while Els' closing birdie capped a 68 that earned him outright second ahead of Kataoka, who also closed with a four to finish on 13 under.
Thai veteran Thongchai Jaidee birdied the final three holes to return a 69 and claim fourth on 10 under, while England's Simon Dyson failed to mount a last-day challenge as he stuttered to a 73 to finish 11 strokes off the pace.
