LeBron James has been crowned NBA MVP for a fourth time in his career, narrowly failing to win it with a clean sweep in the voting.

The Miami Heat star received 120 of the 121 first-place votes in the ballot; Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder finished a distant second, ahead of New York City Knicks' Carmelo Anthony.

James averaged 26.8 points, 8.0 rebounds and 7.3 assists during the 2012/13 regular season, helping the Heat finish with the best record in the league.

The 28-year-old becomes the fifth player to be given the honour on four or more occasions, joining a select club that also includes Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Michael Jordan, Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain.

James has actually won it four times in the past five years, including twice during his time with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The only player to break his run of dominance in recent years was Derrick Rose, the Chicago Bulls point guard scooping the trophy after the 2010/11 campaign.
