St Louis Cardinals shut out Colorado Rockies for second successive game
Adam Wainwright pitched a two-hitter into the eighth for the St Louis Cardinals' second straight complete-game shutout in a 3-0 win over the Colorado Rockies.
Combining with Shelby Miller, who retired 27 straight on Friday after allowing a lead-off single, Wainwright helped St Louis pitching hold Colorado hitless for a span of 50 batters - 49 outs plus the walk to Todd Helton in the fifth which spoiled his bid for a perfect game - until Nolan Arenado singled in the eighth.
Helton's walk also ended a run of 40 straight Rockies retired. Allen Craig, Yadier Molina and Matt Adams all had an RBI apiece for the Cards.
Stephen Strasburg retired 11 straight to begin the game then fell to his fifth straight defeat as the Chicago Cubs beat the Washington Nationals 8-2.
Strasburg, who has just one win to his name this year, looked comfortable until Ryan Zimmerman's error in the fifth allowed four unearned runs to score. David DeJesus, Anthony Rizzo and pitcher Edwin Jackson each drove in a pair for the Cubs.
