New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum attempted to focus on the positives despite seeing his side bowled out for 68 as they lost the first Test with England at Lord's.

Day four began well enough for the Black Caps, as they dismissed Alastair Cook's side for 213 in their second innings.

That left the tourists chasing 239 for victory but they suffered an embarrassing batting collapse, slumping to 29-6 at lunch, McCullum himself the final victim before the interval.

The end finally came around 50 minutes into the afternoon session as New Zealand recorded the 10th lowest score in a Test match at Lord's, to leave McCullum to reflect on what might have been.

"During the first couple of days we had periods of domination even, I'm incredibly proud to have been in a position to chase 230 (sic) in the second innings," he said.

"We've taken some steps forward as a team but today was a step backwards.

"We know there is another Test in a few days' time and you can't forget about what happened today, but we need to glean positives from this performance.

"I'm confident we can apply ourselves better than we did today."

New Zealand will get their chance to avenge the crushing defeat when the second and final Test against England begins at Headingley on Friday.
