DA Points holds nerve to triumph in dramatic Houston Open finale

DA Points sank a superb 13-foot putt on the 18th to clinch victory in the Houston Open.

Points, 34, had been having a terrible year coming into the event, missing seven cuts in his last nine events.

The Florida-based Points has been having particular trouble on the greens, but he dusted off his mother's old putter, used it in Texas, and he barely missed a putt all week.

Points closed with a six-under 66 in the final round, saving par on the last two holes at Redstone Golf Club to outlast Masters-bound Henrik Stenson and Billy Horschel.

The final round was halted for nearly three hours because of storms that soaked the course. Points, who birdied three of the first four holes on the back nine, was on the course at 16-under with four holes to finish when the storm came.
But he came back out and kept his composure with two tricky pars to clinch his second victory on the tour.
Tough

On the final green he had a 13-footer, slightly downhill, which had he missed would have led to a play-off with Stenson and Horschel - but he held his nerve to sink it.

Points also kept up the Americans' extraordinary domination of the PGA Tour this year - home golfers have now won all 14 events of the season.

The victory gives Points a spot in the Masters, just like his only other victory did two years ago at the pro-am Pebble Beach tournament with actor Bill Murray as his partner.

Asked what he was thinking before rolling in his 13-foot winning putt he said: "Whatever happens, happens. It's been a really tough year. To have a putt to win, you always want that starting out every week.

"I've been putting well and I just thought whatever happens, happens, just hit a good putt. Getting it up and down on 17 and again on 18, it was special.

"I had a really good flow before the rain delay. I was firing on all cylinders and I'm proud of myself that the rain delay didn't put a hitch in that."

And given his new-found form on the green, he remembered to thank his mother for lending him her putter.

"My mom was back home in Florida, probably yelling at the TV," he said.

Brian Davis was the top British name on the final board - he finished three shots behind Points on 13 under par.
