Portugal Open: Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova defeats Carla Suarez Navarro in final
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova won her first trophy on clay after defeating Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro 7-5 6-2 at the Portugal Open.
The third-seeded Russian proved too powerful as she picked up the fifth title of her career and second of the year while leaving her opponent winless from five finals.
The world No 19, who is coached by Swiss great Martina Hingis, kept Suarez Navarro frustrated as she saved three set points over two games late in the opening set before breaking to turn the momentum in her favour.
The 21-year-old right-hander converted on her first of three set points after 56 minutes and she continued in a similar vein into the second set.
Pavlyuchenkova won three straight games before Suarez Navarro steadied with a love game for 1-3.
The Spanish world No 23 saved a break point to hold for 2-4 before going down to defeat in just over 90 minutes on a final break in the last game, ending with 43 unforced errors.
