New York Yankees turn triple-play in narrow win over Orioles
The New York Yankees turned their first home triple-play in 45 years on their way to a 5-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles at Yankee Stadium.
The eighth-inning triple came with the Yankees in a touch of trouble, not long after taking the lead on an Adam Jones error.
Jones dropped a fly-ball Vernon Wells while casually blowing a bubble in the outfield, and his mistake allowed Francisco Cervelli, Kevin Youkilis and Travis Hafner to come around and score.
Baltimore started the eighth with two singles off CC Sabathia but the Yankees got out of the hole thanks to one of the plays of the season so far.
Manny Machado hit a sharp low liner that Cano caught on a short hop near second base, and he tossed the ball to Jayson Nix for the force-out at second.
Alexi Casilla, thinking the ball was going to be caught by Cano, got trapped in a rundown between second and third base and thinking triple play, Youkilis tagged him out and made a quick throw to first baseman Lyle Overbay when Machado ranged too far off the bag.
Overbay then made an awkward throw to Cano, who tagged Machado, setting off celebrations in the infield and in the packed stands.
It was also a good day for New York's National League team, the Mets, who thrashed the Twins 16-5 in Minnesota.
Daniel Murphy, David Wright and John Buck each batted in four runs, with Buck's coming in one hit, a Grand Slam off Pedro Hernandez in the sixth inning.
They stormed into 9-2 lead before the end of the second, Vance Worley giving up seven of those runs in an ugly start.
The Atlanta Braves continued their red-hot start to the season, going to 9-1 by beating the Washington National 6-4 in 10 innings, Ramiro Pena coming up with the vital two-run homer.
And there was also an extra-innings win for the American League's best side Oakland, the Athletics coming through 4-3 in the 12th when Josh Donaldson homered off Brayan Villareal.
