The New York Yankees continued their hot streak thanks to a Travis Hafner homer
Travis Hafner smashed a pinch-hit go-ahead home run in the eighth inning as the New York Yankees came from behind to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-3.
The Yankees trailed 3-0 at one point after a shaky start from CC Sabathia but the starting pitcher then settled down and they roared back to claim their seventh win in eight games.
Hafner batted for Ben Francisco with the bases empty and two outs in the eighth and hit a first-pitch fastball from David Hernandez into the lower level in right-centre.
And Sabathia eventually pitched eight innings, allowing three runs and six hits, before closer Mariano Rivera took care of the ninth.
Brett Gardner had a tying, two-run single off reliever Tony Sipp in the seventh for New York, who had been kept fairly quiet until then by Arizona starter Wade Miley.
The Boston Red Sox remain top of the AL East after they won 6-3 at Cleveland, their fifth victory in a row.
Mike Napoli and Daniel Nava both drove in two runs for Boston while Nick Swisher and Jason Giambi hit home runs in vain for the Indians.
Good night for Burnett
Over in the National League, pitcher A.J Burnet registered the 2,000th strikeout of his career and took a no-hitter into the seventh as Pittsburgh beat St Louis 5-0.
Burnett struck out seven in eight innings and Neil Walker had a pair of hits and an RBI for the Pirates.
Bryce Harper returned to the Washington Nationals line-up after missing a game with flu and he had four hits as they defeated the Miami Marlins 6-1.
Kurt Suzuki contributed two hits, including a home run, and drove in two runs for Washington, and Ross Detwiler had his third quality start in a row, allowing just one run in seven innings.
