New York Yankees hit back in game two against Indians after losing first contest
The Cleveland Indians snapped New York's five-game winning streak on Monday with a 1-0 victory before the Yankees hit back with a 7-0 triumph to earn a split of their MLB double-header.
Justin Masterson pitched a four-hit shutout and Jason Kipnis homered in the first inning to swing the first game at Progressive Field in the Indians' favour.
Vidal Nuno delivered five scoreless innings in the second meeting, though, and a six-run seventh inning secured the Yankees a sixth win in seven. Vernon Wells and Lyle Overbay had two RBI apiece.
Andy Dirks' maiden grand slam helped the Detroit Tigers sink the Houston Astros 7-2, while two home runs from rookie Aaron Hicks lifted the Minnesota Twins to a 10-3 win over the Chicago White Sox.
Also in the American League, five hits and five RBI from Billy Butler spurred the Kansas City Royals to an 11-4 victory over the Los Angeles Angels and the Oakland Athletics defeated the Texas Rangers 5-1.
Three straight
In the National League, the Chicago Cubs claimed their third straight win in style - thrashing the Colorado Rockies 9-1 at Wrigley Field.
Travis Wood threw seven scoreless innings and hit an RBI double, while Alfonso Soriano blasted a two-run homer for the Cubs.
Ty Wigginton scored from second on an infield hit to snap a 3-3 tie in the seventh inning as the St Louis Cardinals overcame the New York Mets 6-3 at Busch Stadium.
Justin Upton and Chris Johnson both hit two-run homers against their former team as the Atlanta Braves snapped a three-game skid by thrashing the Arizona Diamondbacks 10-1.
Finally, Marco Estrada pitched seven solid innings to help the Milwaukee Brewers end a four-game losing streak by toppling the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-1 at PNC Park and the Washington Nationals were 6-2 winners against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
